Guidelines for the Dreiburgen web site

1) All pages in all subdirectories on dreiburgen.org will adhere to applicable SCA and Caid rules regarding web content. This includes having the proper disclaimer where needed, and adhering to the photo and accessibility policies. See the links section below.

2) All pages in the root directory of dreiburgen.org (i.e part of the actual baronial site, as opposed to canton sites) will maintain the "look and feel" of the site. The side navigation using the towers is optional when content needs the extra width (see the Roll of Arms and second library pages for examples), but pages for officers and other "main" sections of the site should have the side navigation.

Maintaining the "look and feel" includes having the correct CSS code, so that changes to the style sheet do reflect globally. Please do not change other "template" sections of the code, either; if I have to make global changes, I open all pages and do a "search and replace." This doesn't work if the navigation/header/footer code has been changed.

Basically, you can do what you will with the main table cell (as long as you use the CSS correctly), but please don't change anything else :-). If you need help, ask. I'm willing to train.

3) All pages on the Dreiburgen site will validate to at least HTML 4.01 Transitional. There are validators at http://validator.w3.org where you can check pages either on from hard drive or after uploading them, and there's also a CSS validator available. Personally, I try to make my pages validate XHTML 1.0 Transitional, but while I recommend it I'm not requiring it of others.

4) Check your pages on more than one browser to make sure they don't "break." I've done things that looked great in Opera but terrible in Netscape. Remember that there are still a few people out there who, by choice or otherwise, use pre-version-4 browsers, text-only browsers, and WebTV. No, you don't have to make pages look good on WebTV, just readable. See the links section below for some useful tools.

5) No mailto links. There is a javascript file to include email addresses in a manner that's difficult for spambots to read. Please use it. If you want help, please ask.

6) If you maintain a section of the baronial site, you are de facto a deputy. Therefore, you should report to the baronial web minister preferably monthly, but at the very least whenever significant changes are made to your section. Reporting changes as they are made will make the periodic reports easier :-).

7) I strongly discourage frames. If you're doing a non-barony section and really want to use them, at least use them well. Don't trap people when they click on a link to an outside site. Don't make the frames so that people with lower resolution or smaller screens can't see everything.
